The Joy of a Newspaper

My husband, an intelligent news junkie just hitting 60, put forward to me that the only way that the ‘newspapers’ can survive is to appeal to people in an on-line format.

His case was strong. Environmentally responsible. In touch with today’s generation. People looking for news clips want speed, variety, flexibility and convenience.

That said, every Saturday, he goes to the store and buys me the Saturday Globe and Mail ($6.00 CDN now!!)   Often he has to go to more than one store to get it as such a limited number are stocked.

I get one every weekend – a treat!

I save it for Sunday, my day off – it makes my day.

I lounge with the paper in the afternoon after finishing what I need to do … browse the articles and read in-depth opinions – catch up on the world – and, best of all, spend time doing the crossword.

I do them in pen – I like to commit.  (I realize that you can download the crossword from the online version, print it and complete that way ~ it’s just not the same.)

The beauty and joy of having a good old-fashioned, retro, newspaper is being able to lay it out – to hear the crinkle as you fold it, have a cat walk over it, put it down for a bit while you do something else and be able to pick it up without having to log in, refresh the page or worry about a charge.

There are no pop-up ads, nothing to take your attention from what you are reading. It allows you to enjoy the piece, reflect on it and then affords you the time to form your own opinions – all without timing out.

What a luxury in today’s short attention span world.

Perhaps I am from a lost generation, but in my opinion there are some things that should not go the way of the dodo.

(Hopefully I am not one of them!!)
