On Being A Hero

It is Remembrance Day here in Canada. (11 November)

This is the day each year that we take the time to share moments of our lives with others to Remember and Honour those in our history that have served and sacrificed for our Country and our way of life. We also honour those that are currently Serving.

The date is sacrosanct. It does not change whether it falls on a weekend or a weekday. It does not have gifts, dinners or any expectations. It is about Respect.

There are people that sign up for service to our Country. Like my Dad. He did not see war nor was he deployed but he dedicated his life’s work to his Country.

We all know someone who has served in some way. Past and Present. We are all touched by these heroes.

There are those in life that have it in them to give on the highest level. And we are Grateful.

What makes a person so? I saw a news story recently that had a man make a mis-step and fall into the path of a coming commuter train. A bystander immediately, without hesitation, reached down and pulled him off the track with truly moments to spare.

Was he a Hero? Absolutely. He did not sign up. He did not go through training. I believe that he had been taught that this is what you do in life – you step up. I believe that this person had it in his heart that we are ‘our brother’s keeper’ – that we are meant to Do Good. It was his natural reflex to pull that man out of danger without a second’s thought.

Some are heroes as a reflection of a single action. Our Country’s Service Members made a conscious decision, not only to sign up initially, but to get up each day and live that decision. For the Common Good.

We can all be heroes if we strive to live our lives as a positive member of society with morals, ethics and compassion for all.

But, right now, let’s Honour those who have already stepped up.

Lest we Forget.
